Licensing
Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server is licensed through Microsoft Volume Licensing (MVLS) in the Microsoft Online Services program on a per-user or per-device subscription model. This license includes all anti-malware and antispam scanning engine updates, signatures, and product upgrades during the license period.
Customers can license Forefront for Exchange as part of the following Microsoft licensing programs:

Licensing for Industry-Leading Antivirus Scanning Engines
Forefront for Exchange includes multiple industry-leading engines for protection against malware and spam. The status of these engines can be found on the
Anti-malware Engine Notifications and Developments page1. The license permits the use and updates of all scanning engines. Customers can use all or a subset of these engines for each scanning operation within Forefront for Exchange.
Downgrade Rights
Customers who purchase Forefront for Exchange will also be licensed to use Microsoft Antigen for Exchange, Microsoft Antigen for SMTP Gateways, and Antigen Spam Manager to protect their Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 environments.
External Connector
To protect Exchange Server External Connector deployments, customers can license the Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server External Connector. Customers should purchase one license for each Exchange Server External Connector that they are protecting.
Software Assurance
Forefront for Exchange licenses include Software Assurance, which gives customers access to 24x7 phone and unlimited e-mail support. For more benefit details, visit www. microsoft.com/forefront/serversecurity/ exchange. Under the Technical Resources tab, click Support Options. (Note that Software Assurance benefits must be activated in order to be used.) Service Provider Offerings In both the SPLA and HVS programs, Forefront for Exchange provides Basic, Standard, and Standard Plus offerings. These align directly with the Exchange Server Basic, Standard, and Standard Plus offerings in these programs. Please note that functionality within Forefront for
Exchange is the same for each offering. The price difference is based solely on what is being protected—for example, Exchange Basic vs. Exchange Standard Plus.
